Why Do You Swish? March 1, 2009

Sean McMahon, Swish Member, New York City

I Swish because I am an advocate for the rights and respect of all people.  At different points in my life, I've been involved in social causes affecting marginalized groups in our society.  My current involvement in the LGBT movement through Swish and other organizations is a direct result of the many LGBT friends I have, and of course my relationship with co-founder and president of Swish, Sue Sena.

Working with Swish has given me not only a creative outlet for my music, but also introduced me to numerous other organizations that I was formerly unaware of and now have my own relationship with.  My involvement with Swish has extended beyond DJing at their events into working tables at Pride events in Queens, various fundraisers, and assisting in voter registration.

The key element in Swish, to me, is the straight component and membership.  Discriminated groups need allies in the dominant controlling parties and Swish provides that network and opportunity for members of the straight community to become involved in a fun but necessary way without feeling alone.

My true hope is that one day there will not be a need for Swish, but I think we are far from that.  In the meantime, my desire is that Swish will grow much further beyond its New York base and establish strong progressive chapters in other cities.  It is time for people between New York and California to have a vehicle to unite around and bring much needed change and acceptance in our society.
